Pt. Budhaditya Mukherjee is a well known face in the circuit of Hindustani Classical music. He is a Sitar and Surbahar player hailing from the famous “Imdadkhani Gharana”. He started his training under the tutelage of his father Bimalendu Mukherjee at a very early age. Bimalendu Mukherjee himself was a student of Enayat Khan and an exponent of the Imdadkhani Gharana. Imdadkhani Gharana hails its name from the famous maestro Imdad Khan (1848-1920). This School of music also known as the Etawah Gharana after a small town near Agra where Imdad Khan lived, is famous for it’s Sitar and Surbahar music. The major achievements of this school include major modifications of the Surbahar sometimes also known as the Bass Sitar and Sitar itself. Vilayat Khan made structural changes to the Sitar to suit his style of playing which is known as the Gayaki Ang (vocal style performed on the Sitar). This type of Sitar is known as the Viayat Khani Sitar. In this particular album Pt. Budhaditya Mukherjee has beautifully rendered the raga Behag ,which is primarily a night time raga (second quarter of the night). It is both a romantic and celebratory raga. This makes this raga quite popular especially used during weddings. A lot of usage of Raga Behag can be found in contemporary film scores. This is a soulful rendition by Pt. Budhaditya Mukherjee and is a must collectible for Hindustani Classical Music connoisseurs.
